Archives on Our Lighthouses, Logging and More
The Sand Point Lighthouse, Historical Museum, Archives and other exhibits on the buildings and grounds of the Delta County Historical Society are located in Ludington Park, on the lakefront, at the far East end of Ludington Street in Escanaba, Michigan.
The Sand Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1867 to direct ships around the Sand point and into the deep water channel of the Escanaba Harbor. This building, with a 4th order Fresnel lens, has been restored to its original appearance, with a turn of the century interior. The building and grounds are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Historical Museum is part of the same complex of buildings. Featured are the industries, business and people who influenced the development of Delta County over the years. Special features are logging, agricultural, and shipping exhibits, as well as items used in daily life. Attendants are on duty at both the Museum and the Lighthouse to answer questions and conduct tours as requested.
The Archives contain the written and pictorial documents of Delta County history. This facility lies between the lighthouse and the museum. Also on the grounds are outdoor exhibits and a self-guided tour of a building dedicated to the Lighthouse Service and Coast Guard.
Visitors are welcome from June 1 until September 1 everyday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. September hours are 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. everyday. Special tours or appointments are available by calling 906-789-6790.
